Caesalpinia ferrea, commonly known as the Leopard Tree, Brazilian Ironwood, or Pau-Ferro, is a stunning ornamental tree native to Brazil and popular in tropical and subtropical landscapes around the world. Its name “Leopard Tree” comes from the striking mottled bark, which peels away in patches to reveal a camouflage-like pattern of cream, gray, and brown—giving it high aesthetic value in landscape design.
This semi-deciduous tree is fast-growing, drought-tolerant, and can reach up to 12–15 meters in height. It features delicate, fern-like foliage and bright yellow flowers that bloom in clusters, attracting bees and other pollinators. Caesalpinia ferrea is not only admired for its beauty but also for its hardwood, which is used in fine carpentry, musical instruments, and luxury furniture due to its durability and unique grain.
