Lawsonia inermis, popularly known as the Henna Plant or Mehndi Plant, is a hardy, flowering shrub famous for its leaves that produce a natural red-orange dye used in traditional body art, hair care, and textiles. Native to North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, henna thrives in hot, dry climates and is widely cultivated for its cosmetic, cultural, and medicinal benefits.
The plant can grow up to 6–8 feet tall, forming a dense, bushy shape with small, fragrant white or pinkish flowers that bloom in summer. Its leaves contain lawsone, a natural dye molecule known for its cooling, antimicrobial, and conditioning properties. Henna is a staple in Ayurvedic remedies and is used to treat skin conditions, improve scalp health, and naturally color hair.
